Urban Whispers - a voice of a generation is a podcasting project run by Liverpool John Moores University’s International Centre for Digital Content (ICDC). The project has been jointly funded by Liverpool, European Capital of Culture and Heritage Lottery Fund.
It is part of a national Portrait of a Nation programme of creative, locally developed projects in 17 cities which form the Cultural Cities Network. These projects will highlight arts and heritage projects involving young people identifying and exploring what is special about where they come from, their local cultures and communities as well as what they want to save, share and pass on for the future.
ICDC's Urban Whispers - a voice of a generation project engaged 4 groups of young people in North Liverpool in developing their own podcasts. The groups explored what it is like to live in the city – at present, in the past and hopes for the future, resulting in a surprisingly candid exchange of intimate stories. Themes ranged from serious issues such as racist attacks, gun crime, bereavement and parental separation to the extraordinary ‘being treated like royalty’ to the everyday ‘going to the youthy’.
The podcasts were showcased on the BBC Big Screen in Liverpool City Centre and will feature in Liverpool, Capital of Culture's final showcase event at St Georges Hall on 1st and 2nd December 2008.
