In the seventies, local tenants and residents of a 1950s housing estate formed the Croxteth Tenants and Residents Association to identify the needs of the community. It began as a small group, run out of peoples homes, they then moved to a prefab accommodation on a piece of derelict land within the area. In the 1970’s, and after intense community involvement, including the voice and participation of young people, many meetings and research, they acquired funding to build a small centre on the same site. This is when they decided to change their name to Croxteth Gems Community Association.

The Centre has a training room that is used to support a range of training and placement activities contributing to the expansion at a pre-vocational, vocational and professional level in the surrounding area. This training also enmeshes and integrates other services and training that are currently operational or being developed in the area. Other activities that take place at the Gems Community Association include a Youth Club; Drop in Study Centre (DISC), IT, arts and crafts and music facilities, including a recording studio, and a successful After School Club.
